How to boost your internet speed at home

by Kate Thrall April 15, 2022

It is a random Monday morning; you wake up feeling tensed and anxious as the presentation that you had been preparing for a week is finally due today. You make yourself a cup of hot chocolate, dress up in your best formal wear and turn on your laptop. Just as you sign in to zoom in and start delivering your presentation, you see your laptop screen freezing and this interrupts your entire flow.

You keep asking your coworkers if they can hear you but the only thing you can see on the screen is the phrase ‘check your internet connection’. This boils your blood and the next thing you know you are out of the meeting. Your entire week’s hard work has gone in vain. To cheer yourself up you turn to YouTube thinking that it would give you the comfort that you need after a long, hard day.

However, to your surprise, the video gets stuck in the middle of a very intense scene and you start questioning your luck. Nevertheless, what you need to understand is that your luck is not at fault here. What you desperately need in your life is a stable internet connection that is both fast and reliable. This way all your frustrations will vanish and your life would be free of little inconveniences that ruin your mood.

If you are also one of those people who are tired of their slow internet connection and want to attend your zoom meetings in peace, then checking out prominent internet service providers like Optimum would be the way to go. Whether you are into streaming, gaming, or video conferencing, Optimum internet delivers a high-octane service for a faster, secure, and more reliable web experience.

So now that you have gotten your hands on a stable and safer internet connection, let us walk you through some of the simple steps that will help you boost your internet speed at home.

Start your modem up again

The first step would be to very carefully unplug the modem that you are using at home, put a timer of thirty seconds, and as soon as the timer starts buzzing, put the modem back inside the socket. This procedure permits the modem’s virtual head to clear.

The job of your modem is to essentially interpret internet signals amidst your home area network and your internet service provider. In case your internet is giving you a hard time, try employing a power cycle, which is a great place to begin troubleshooting, the reason being that it usually fixes connection problems.

However, it is always better to get in touch with a customer service representative who will then reboot and restart your device remotely and ensure it is correctly regulated to translate your internet signals.

Turn on your router again

Repeat the entire process in case you possess a standalone router. A power cycle like we have mentioned before helps in clearing your router’s memory much like it does with the modem and blesses it with a fresh start on activities that were previously slowing it down.

After completing this step, switch off the WiFi on all the wireless gadgets that you have. Again set a timer of a few seconds as soon as the timer goes off, turn on the WiFi again. Allow these devices to rejoin and see if the quality of your connection improves.

Switching your network equipment on and off repeatedly actually uplifts your network. Keeping this in mind, we would recommend you restart your equipment on a regular basis, every few months, at the very least. However, also bear in mind that you will be without internet for a few seconds if you do this, thus plan to reboot your devices when no one else in the house is using them.

Change your router’s position

WiFi signals can only travel so far, and they can be obstructed or disrupted by walls, furniture, appliances, and pretty much any major physical item. Radio waves from other devices such as microwaves and cordless phones can also disrupt these signals.

As a result, if you put your router in a corner, you can have problems with WiFi on the other end of your house. The optimal location for your router is somewhere central and elevated, close to where you utilize the internet the most. Do not put your router in the basement or a closet; you will end up with connectivity problems.

Remove any connections that are not necessary

In case your bandwidth is running low, you should turn off all unused devices. Changing your wireless fidelity passwords as well as rebooting your router are the easiest ways to unplug non-essential devices.

After that, you will need to log back into your network using the new password on all of your devices. This technique will remove all superfluous connections, just like the emergency phone you keep turned on and which continues to download updates discreetly.

Talk to your internet service provider and try to come to an agreement

In case there is just a single internet service provider in your area, it most likely has several plans. Even if you dislike your speed, your ISP might provide you with a speedy plan that would best match your needs.

Yes, we are aware that paying extra money each month can be a hassle however in case your internet is giving you a tough time and you have no other option, this actually might be the best alternative you have.

Hence, get in touch with your provider and ask them about the different plans available. Another way would be surfing the web and finding packages and bundles online.

Final words

Always remember that your WiFi router plays a very important part in determining the internet speeds you receive throughout your home network. Using the tips mentioned in this article, you would be able to optimize your WiFi signals and enjoy speedy internet at home.
